Kati – black/white/roan German Shorthaired Pointer.

Sunny evening at Spanish Bank in Vancouver, the beach is packed with people and dogs, the sun beam down and reflects of the water…I am thinking not the best time to photograph a black dog, but well I will make the best of it. I will find some shade and we can do anything!

Kati is almost 5 years old,  she is a happy dog with a happy home. The life was not easy for her, when she was 18 moths old she had an accident that injured her leg and left her with nerve paralysis.

She can run and do pretty much everything with a bit of caution, unfortunately we chose the wrong location for her and she was unable to run on the rocky beach. On a very sunny evening we could not count on photos in the water. Too much reflection from her dark, wet coat. Even polarizing filter was hopeless. Unless you have a team of assistants with sun blocking screens and fill in lighting you not going to succeed with black, wet dog in the water that reflects the sun.

If you are just on your own with dog moving fast in a water reflecting sun this is the result..:(

Sometimes the best solution is to find some shade and let the dog relax, it makes for nice portraits.

I love this tiny sun flare at the edge of the photo, it is like the angels sending good fortune…

Kati is not alone, her family consist of mom and two sisters, who worked as my background in this photo.

I love this family shot.

Here is a happy dog on the beach!

And again using her sister a background and a bit of the reflection blocker..

If you are ever hiring someone to do a photography service for you, please rely on them in terms of places and times the best for it, it will make everyone’s job easier and the results might be better too.
