Golden Retreiver – Lauer

Another rainy day in Vancouver, it seems like this winter is never going to end.  Even Lauer, 9 year old Golden Retriever, was cold during the shoot. We met at Spanish Bank in Vancouver for our dog photography session and  we made the best use we could of couple of hours’ break from the rain.

Lauer, named after Mat Lauer if you wondering,  is a very active dog, you would have never guessed the she is 9. She is in a great shape, regular walks with Walks n wags help a lot to keep her in a top notch condition.

Lauer and her mom worked so well with me. I should probably add that Lauer’s mom is a fantastic photographer herself. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the email from her stating that she wanted to hire me to take pictures of her beloved dog. I thought to myself why? Well, for the same reason I would hire a maternity photographer to take pictures of me if I was pregnant, we all do what we do best and I have gone to the dogs!

This toy did not last the whole session, but I liked it so much I wanted to sneak the picture in..

Also it took no time before Lauer was in the water..

Looks like fun, but pretty cold, even for a dog!

Lauer was shivering a bit when she came out of the water and her mom was thinking of taking her jacket off to warm her up, so sweet! But instead we send her running and jumping on the beach.

Oh, man she is a fast one! I was quite a challenge to time the photos right.

lauer_blog4

It is quite amazing how different she looks wet and dry..

As always, wonderful time.  What can I say I do have the best job in the world, for me anyway.. I get licked, pushed, dripped on, wet tail in the face and I love all of it. By the way if you ever decide to run backwards on the beach full of rocks you are going to have a very sore bum, trust me! I cannot even blame the dog, all me… not using my brain. The only explanation of this temporary insanity I can offer is the fact that I get into the zone when I photograph and I truly forget about humans around me, myself painfully included!

Spring please! Soon!

Another piece of news I am going to be away from mid May till end of June 2009.

Tracking – dog sport-Editorial

I have been so busy lately, my apologies for lack of the updates, but not all my work can be published on the blog.  I can share bits and pieces from this weekend’s shoot..

So, you looking for something fun to do with your dog? You want to teach him something new and useful and have fun while doing it. I am about to introduce you to tracking… where the dog uses his most powerful tool, his…

blog-track_0455

Yes you right, his nose!

In South Surrey, BC in Canine Harmony Academy Chanone Sanders, Certified Master Dog Trainer teaches owners and their dogs how to successfully track objects and people. The technique used by search and rescue, police dogs and border crossing dogs.

blog_tracking5

It does not matter if you dog is small or big, you just need enough stamina and determination to brave the elements (it was snowing a bit!) and patiently teach your dog new skills.

Did you noticed the lashes on this dog? Amazing!

I am not about to tell you all about it as I just took some photos to illustrate the article that will be written by an amazing lady in the summer issue.

Below, Chanone gives the instructions for the dog  and tries to point him in the direction of the smell. The object of the game is to get the dog to find the person, not using his eyes, but just sense of smell.

It could take a while, but all dogs eventually succeeded

And finding the person hiding felt really good for all involved.

As always hanging out with bunch of dogs and their moms and dads was a lot of fun! Just look at these brave people in rain and snow, not giving up!

Shooting during event like this poses some difficulties, the fact that you have to keep away not to mess up the scent it can have you tangled in a black berry bushes..ouch! My gear does not really like to get wet, so I am grateful to Tanya for running around with an umbrella trying to cover my camera. Thank you!

Oliver very special Mix

Meet Oliver, the most amazing dog I got to photograph, we did the session near his home in South Surrey. He does not go for long walks. Oliver got run over by the truck when he was a puppy, his spine was damaged and the owners were told that the best option is to put him down.. Oliver ended up in SPCA, few vet consultations  and the same verdict..Finally there was a vet who would not give up and thought that Oliver deserves the chance. Oliver could not walk, had no control of his bowel movements. He drag his feet behind. The doctor  from All Critters Animal Hospital decided to send Oliver for swimming therapy. After few months of walking on the tread mill under water at the K9H2o center Oliver was taking his first steps using all four legs on the ground.

Before I met Oliver I felt sorry for a poor dog, the photos I have seen he looked quite sad and hopeless. Well, do not feel sorry for Oliver! I really do not! He is such a strong dog and he has no idea that he is disabled in anyway. He falls a lot, cannot jump or sit. But it does not crumple his spirit. If you have a look at the photos below you will know what I mean. Confidence and strength all the way through.

Oliver is a mix, his new parents (he was adopted from SPCA after the accident) had his DNA tested and he the result shows him to have Shar Pei, Shiba Inu, Husky, Chow, Basset Hound and A German Pointer. Hard to believe that there is  not a Sheppard in this mixture. Oliver is now about 3 years old.

As I said before Oliver is very special and he was a recipient of SPCA Courage Award in 2006. Here is the quote from SPCA website.

“Oliver”, Surrey Branch, Animal Courage Award.

Each year the BC SPCA honors an animal in its care who has exemplified the courage and resilience shown by the thousands of abused and neglected animals rescued by the SPCA each year. Oliver was struck by a truck on a busy street in Surrey earlier this year and has been unable to walk because of a crushed pelvis.

After four months of extensive physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, this courageous dog has made miraculous progress and veterinarians predict he will make a full recovery. SOURCE

Now Oliver can run, walking on the sidewalk is quite challenging for him, he falls a lot, but on the grass he does just fine. Oliver is not different from any dog, that I met when it comes to the treats. Once he figured out that I am a great source of cookies he would not leave me alone.. Even not being able to jump, he managed to extend himself as far as possible and demanded more by quite a powerful bark.

He will not put on any weight, not matter how many biscuits he will have. That is just his nature – skinny

Oliver got an award for his progress, but I think people who gave him a chance deserve recognition. My hat off to his mommies Sheila and Leila, the vet who was willing to work with him and not give up; Kendal DeMeneche who let him use the facilities at K9H2O and all the people at SPCA who do not give up!

Oliver, you have taught me a lesson, seeing you so confident and so unaware of your so called “disability” really made me think about the fact that we restrain ourselves too much trying to fit into the perfect picture. Perfect picture is our creation and the photos of you are the way I saw you.

I do not feel sorry for you, and nobody should. I admire you. Thank you Oliver!

Oliver lives with Patrick and Benard that I photographed week earlier, if you want to see these guys on the beach click here.
